He is a lifetime member of USA Diving, and is the Junior Olympic representative for the state of Connecticut for this organization. Joe was awarded the Robert Moss Award in 2001, for his numerous contributions to diving. Joe brings a wealth of experience to the team as he completes his 22nd year of coaching. Joe grew up diving at the Newfield Swim & Tennis Club, was a high school All-American stand-out at Stamford High School, and went on to Clemson University, where he lettered in diving for four years and was a four-time NCAA zone qualifier, an All-American candidate, an All Atlantic Coast Conference champion, and a team captain. Somma is the head coach of the Whirlwind Diving team at the New Canaan YMCA, which he founded in 1997. Parents are encouraged to be involved and be a positive presence at practices, meets, and all Whirlwind functions. In addition, the Parents Association sponsors fundraising events/meets, which give significant financial support to the Whirlwind program. Families take mentorship roles to help new families become acclimated to the world of competitive diving.
Throughout the year, the Parents Association organizes programs and events to help build community and support the goals of the program. Whirlwind Diving Parents AssociationĪs the parents of Whirlwind divers, we stay actively involved in our children’s experiences by providing support and services outside practice times. Diving Lessonsĭiving Lessons are 45-minute sessions for children interested in trying out the sport of diving before committing to a full session. Please contact Adam Vance at 20 to schedule an evaluation. *Please note: Levels 4-10 need an evaluation from the coaching staff prior to beginning the program. These levels are our elite levels for divers who have qualified for USA Diving Junior National events, have been selected to an All-American team, and have a competitive junior platform list. Divers in this level will have the opportunity to attend a USA Diving regional championship as well. These levels are our YMCA/AAU National Team, and is for divers who attend the YMCA and/or AAU National Championship. Training will focus on their one meter diving. These levels are designed for the athlete whose top priority is high school diving. Divers at this level will attend competitions with the team. This level is for divers on track to becoming part of our Junior Olympic squad. The team returns several high school All-Americans, nine Summer Junior National qualifiers, and thirteen qualifiers for Spring East Nationals.
Current divers include past champions at USA Diving national meets such as, Junior Nationals, Age Groups, and East Nationals. Our JO team competes at a national level, and has won 14 YMCA National Titles. Competitive Whirlwind Diving Programs: Junior Olympic Team (Invitation Only) Commitment: Two or Three Days per Week for 75 Minutes. New divers will need an evaluation from the coaching staff to begin at this level. Gold Team is for divers who have competed in a summer league program and are looking for friendly competitive environment to improve on their skills. Commitment: One, Two or Three Days per Week for 75 Minutes. Silver Team is designed for divers who have mastered basic diving skills and have a limited list of dives.
Commitment: One, Two or Three Days per Week for 45 Minutes. Ages are 11 and under and new to the sport. Non-Competitive Whirlwind Diving Programs: Bronze, Silver, & Goldīronze Team is a non-competitive group designed for beginners who have no background or a limited skill set in diving. Our goal is to help each and every participant develop proper mechanics, have fun, and meet their personal objectives–whether they are novice, recreational, or Junior Olympic athletes. Athletes are grouped and trained in the below competitive and non-competitive levels. We welcome new divers in every age group and at every level.
